What are companions in Farever?
Companions are cosmetic critter pets that follow your character around the world. They do not fight — that is what Ranger combat pets are for — but they sit on your shoulder, perch on rest points and play idle animations. Every class can have one.
You unlock the companion slot via the Catch a Companion tutorial in Skyover town, then expand your collection through the Gotta Catch One quest line and the Hidden Critterquest. See the Hidden Critter guide for the full questline.

How to catch a companion — step by step
- Talk to the Companion Trainer NPC near the Skyover town fountain (level 3+).
- Accept Catch a Companion — receive the Critter Net.
- Approach any wild critter from behind in the Skyover meadow.
- Hold the use key for ~2 seconds — the net captures it.
- Return to the NPC to confirm the catch. The companion slot is now unlocked.
- Talk to the same NPC again for Gotta Catch One to unlock rare variants.
Best companions to chase first
- Basic critter — unlocks the slot, mandatory prerequisite.
- Ladybug (Cave) — easy Cave find via Gotta Catch One.
- Blue-feather Hawk — best emote set in EA.
- Glow-bug — the only night-glow companion.
- H. Catchum unique — the trophy companion.
FAQ — Farever companions
How do you catch a companion in Farever?
Start the "Catch a Companion" tutorial quest in Skyover town. The NPC gives you a Critter Net. Approach any wild critter from behind, hold the use key, and the net captures it. The starter critter then occupies your companion slot.
What is the "Gotta Catch One" quest in Farever?
A follow-up to "Catch a Companion" that points you to the Ladybug Cave south of Skyover. Completing it unlocks the rare Ladybug companion and opens the Hidden Critter quest line.
How many companions are in Farever?
There are 20+ unique companions in the May 2026 EA build, plus 3 Ranger-exclusive combat pets. The table above lists every meta-relevant cosmetic companion.
Are companions the same as combat pets?
No. Companions are cosmetic critters available to every class — they do not fight. Ranger combat pets (Wolf Pup, Hawk, Bear Cub) fight at your side, hold aggro, and scale with Ranger gear. You can have one of each active at the same time.
Best companion in Farever?
Blue-feather Hawk and Glow-bug are the two consensus S-tier picks. Hawk for the shoulder-perch animation, Glow-bug for the only night-glowing companion in EA.
Can I have more than one companion?
No, only one companion slot is active at a time. You collect all of them, but only one shows on your character. Swap freely at any rest point.
Are any Farever companions missable?
No. All companion quests can be repeated on alt characters. The H. Catchum unique variant is one-time per character but the quest itself is re-runnable.
